Santa Barbara Swim Clubs' Mark Warkentin has taken a dive into uncharted waters as he finished 7th in the FINA 10k Marathon Open Water World Championships and was selected to compete in the inaugural Olympic 10k Marathon Swimming event. The first 10 finishers of the event were guaranteed a spot in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. There will be 25 competitors in Beijing. Five additional spots were available (1 to each of the continental champions named in Sundays competition). The remaining 10 swimmers will be selected on May 31st in a test event conducted in the Beijing race venue. "We thought that the Florida Qualifying race was about as good as it could get as Marks patience was his greatest weapon." said Warkentins coach John Dussliere. "Today, his composure payed off in an incident when Austrailian swimming legend Grant Hackett swam right over the top of Mark when the two of them began to press each other for the best position in the pack. Hackett was given a yellow card for the intentional contact as Warkentin held his focus, composure, and position without retalliation." Hackett was later given the race-fatal red card and disqualified for a later confrontation with a Spanish swimmer. Congratulations to Mark and his family.
SBSC Olympian Mark Warkentin, after winning a spot on the USA Team Sunday, has confirmed his intention to swim the grueling 25k event on Thursday. "As he approached me after our daily team meeting" where he was welcomed by the US World Team as the first Olympian for the 2008 Games; "I was unsure how the conversation was going to go about his intentions regarding the 25k. I had kept the subject quiet between us prior to the 10k as that was the ultimate focus of this competition. It was such a great surprise to hear Mark tell me that he had done what he needed for himself in the 10k and the 25k was an opportunity to get a medal for the team". Marks best 25k to date was done in 2006 in Florida. That race took just over 5 hours. The course conditions in Sevilla are ideal and the competition is truely world class. "Marks got a chance to take on the best 25k swimmers ever assembled at a World Championships". The 25k course will be made up of five laps around a 5 kilometer course.

Jeff Farrell Continues Record Breaking Year! Again!!
It seems every time Santa Barbara Masters swimmer Jeff Farrell decides to enter a meet, he has already decided to take down a World Record. It has happened in just about every meet Jeff has entered in the past year. In the last three weeks at short course meters meets, Jeff has broken records the 50 Free, 100 Free, and 50 Breast. In Woodland hills the week before Thanksgiving; Jeff broke the 50
free record by half-a-second in 28.00. This past weekend in Long Beach at the SCM Champs; Jeff took down the 100 free(1:03.33) by over a second and the 50 breast(37.26) by just over 2 tenths of a second. How does he do it?! Well, he first decides to do it, not try it. Then, he seeks advice on the things he thinks may help in the areas he does not feel he has mastered. This combination is dangerously effective and should be applied more often by the rest of us!! Way to go Jeff!! read more on the masters page

Mark Warkentin Wins 10k U.S. World Trials!!!
Mark Warkentin and Chip Peterson Earn their way to a Beijing bid with their 1-2 finish on October 21st at the USA Swimming 10k Open Water Swimming Selection race in Ft. Myers Florida. In a text book show of racing skills, Mark held back and conserved energy in the 19 swimmer pack for the first 8500 meters. Then, following his race plan, kicked it in to a new gear and went from 7th to first in 50 meters and never looked back. Chip Peterson swam a similar plan and was the only swimmer to challenge Mark on the final 300 meter stretch, but could not hang with him in the final 50 meters as Mark found an additional gear and took another lead. Mark will now begin preparation for the 10k race in Seville, Spain next May where the top 10 finishers will be named to the 2008 Olympic Games. Mark and Chip will be the sole US representives in Seville.

Jeff Farrell Breaks World Record!!!!!
50 freestyle record falls in Farrell's Home Meet/Home Pool!! Jeff had no plans to break this one; it was just the right swim at the right time. Farrell, the veteran Olympic Gold medallist from the 1960 Rome Olympics has been on record pace lately. He just set three records at the recent Masters short course Nationals in Federal Way this spring. More on Farrell
USA Swimming Open Water Championships
Mark did it again!! Winning the 25k Open Water National Championship for the second year in a row!! This win results in Mark being named to the 2008 World Championship Team for the US. The race was tougher this year: not in competition, as he won by over 18 minutes, but the tides were different and swimming against them proved difficult. Warkentin finished third in the 10k National Championships and gained an invitation to the US World Cup Team that will compete in Seville, Spain and London, England this June in addition to qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Trials in the event. Mark held off the fourth place swimmer by just over 2/10ths of a second in the hour and 41 minute event. Monday, Mark will defend his 2006 25k National title by circling central Florida's Estero Island. Last year he finished in 5 hours and one minute. The conditions are nearly ideal and could help to cut nearly 15 minutes off of last years winning time in addition to Marks elevated level of conditioning. Also, Saturday evening Mark took part in the Ocean festival "dash for cash"; a one mile swim along Ft. Myers Beach where he finished second and earned $500.00.
The Elings Aquatic Center at Dos Pueblos High School is finalizing efforts to fund the remaining items needed for the pool to be fully operational. Items ranging from Bleachers to backstroke flags have yet to be purchased so the new 50 meter pool can be fully programmable.
